Election Commission Audits Election

LEBANON, TN - The Wilson County Election Commissioners conducted an audit of the ballots cast during Early Voting, Election Day and Absentee the morning following Election Day. Ballots from a randomly chosen Early Voting site, Election Day vote center and one precinct of Absentee were tabulated to verify the accuracy of the unofficial results announced after polls closed on November 8th.

“We tabulated ballots representing votes cast throughout Wilson County and verified that the election night reporting was accurate. Election preparation includes many hours of detailed testing prior to every election to ensure the reliability of every aspect of the election. This post-election audit is an additional step we take to provide the highest level of transparency and accuracy in administering elections in our county,” said Tammy Smith, Administrator of Elections.

Wilson County transitioned from a direct record voting system in 2016 to a system that allows voters to mark their ballot and receive a paper ballot to review before casting. The paper ballot provides Wilson County voters a printed ballot they can check for accuracy before casting their vote. Having a physical marked ballot also ensures that audits are possible after every election.

“Providing a paper ballot to every voter that they can mark then hold in their hand, examine and verify as correctly reflecting their candidate choices before casting their vote gives voters confidence that their voice is heard. Protecting the integrity of every vote cast is the driving goal of all we do,” commented Smith.

The post-election audit was the first step in the election certification process. Over the next few weeks, the unofficial results and voter records will be reconciled and the November 8, 2022 election will be certified.

Voters took advantage of the Early Voting period with 54% of those that voted, voting early at one of the four locations. Early Voting has become a tradition for Wilson County voters so they can avoid lines, possible inclement weather or anything else that might keep them from the polls on Election Day. Wilson County instituted Vote Centers in 2020 extending the convenience of Early Voting to Election Day. For the last six elections, voters gave been able to cast their votes on Election Day at the most convenient of 18 vote centers throughout the county.

The next regularly scheduled elections will be in 2024. To learn more about elections, voting and how you can become involved, visit www. WilsonElections.com, contact the Election Commission at 230 East Gay St in Lebanon, email info@ wilsonelections.com or call 615-444-0216.
